Why Tara Johnson Started Freedom Tree - And Why It Can't Stop Now

Some organizations are born in boardrooms.

Freedom Tree was born in heartbreak.

Tara Johnson, founder of Freedom Tree, saw what was happening to mothers and children in Sierra Leone - the staggering loss, the preventable deaths, the communities crying out for help and she could not look away.

So she didn't.

She built Freedom Tree on a simple but radical belief: that every mother deserves to survive childbirth. That every child deserves a chance to grow up. That communities have the power to change their own future - if given the tools and the support to do it.

What began as one woman's response to a crisis has grown into a movement. A movement of donors, partners, healthcare workers, community builders, and everyday people who believe that where you are born should not determine whether you live or die.

Freedom Tree has helped fund birth clinics, schools, and community programs in Sierra Leone. And the work is not finished.

In fact, it is just beginning.

Because change like this - real, lasting, generational change - takes time. And commitment. And people who refuse to stop showing up.

Tara hasn't stopped.
