People sometimes ask why Freedom Tree chose Sierra Leone. The answer is simple: because it is where the need is most urgent. Because if we believe every life matters, we have to be willing to go to the hardest places and stay. 

Tara did not start Freedom Tree because it was convenient. She started it because she saw what was happening to mothers in Sierra Leone and realized nobody else was going to fix it. What began as one woman's response to a crisis has grown into a movement of donors, partners and committed builders.

Over 8000 lives saved. Three birthing clinics educated every single month. Thousands of graduates every year. These are not abstract numbers - they are real people who are alive, learning, and thriving because someone chose to act. This is what Freedom Tree has built. Imagine what comes next.

Armed with nothing more than determination and love for their mothers, sisters, and daughters, the community has taken matters into their own hands. Brick by brick, they are building a birth clinic. Carrying water. Mixing mortar. Lifting walls and lifting each other.

From bustling cities to quiet villages, from early mornings to sleepless nights, mothers are there—nurturing, protecting, guiding, and sacrificing. They’re often the first to rise and the last to rest. They’re the ones who go without so their children don’t have to. It gives girls the power to break cycles of poverty, advocate for themselves, and become leaders in their communities.‍The Boys Advocacy Movement‍But we’re not stopping with the girls. We know that true change happens when entire communities are empowered, and that’s why we’re also launching BAM – the Boys Advocacy Movement. BAM equips young boys with the values of respect, leadership, and responsibility, teaching them how to be allies in the fight for equality and opportunity.

As we continue our mission to reduce maternal and infant mortality in Africa, we need passionate individuals and partners to join us. Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a deeply rooted tradition that affects millions of girls and women around the world. While the topic may feel uncomfortable to discuss, bringing it into the light is the only way we can create meaningful change and save countless lives.

As we enter 2025, Freedom Tree reflects on the significant progress made in Sierra Leone and the work still ahead. With the support of generous donors, we are empowering women, children, and entire communities by addressing critical challenges such as high maternal mortality rates and low literacy. Our efforts focus on education, healthcare, and women's empowerment, aiming to break cycles of poverty and inequality. In 2024, we began the construction of the Bhlama school, a symbol of hope and opportunity for future generations. In 2025, our goals include completing the school, expanding maternal health services, and empowering women as leaders.
